Isn't a Blugold Some Mystical Fish?

A majority, if not all, of the students who go through UW–Eau Claire ask “what is a Blugold?” People have asked this as long as the word “blugold” has existed. After a while of searching, I found through an article of The Spectator that there had been a committee in 1965 to come up with a mascot, however, the committee did not succeed in doing do. I also found that in coming up with a name for a mascot; the university had “bulldogs” as one of the possibilities. The university decided against it because some of the local high schools mascots were bulldogs. Some think that the university just rearranged the letters in “bulldogs” to form “blugold.”
